What are the qualifying conditions for a medical cannabis card in Mississippi?

Under the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Act, a patient may qualify for a medical cannabis card if they have one of several serious medical conditions or symptoms. Examples listed in the Act include:

  • Parkinson's disease
  • Huntington's disease
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Glaucoma
  • Spastic quadriplegia
  • Positive status for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)

  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Sickle-cell anemia
  • Alzheimer's disease

  • Spinal cord disease or severe injury

Patients may also qualify if they have a chronic, terminal, or debilitating disease or medical condition that causes cachexia or wasting syndrome, chronic pain, severe or intractable nausea, seizures, or severe and persistent muscle spasms. MSDH may add other serious medical conditions under the Act, so patients should check official MMCP resources for the current list.

Does Mississippi allow home grow for medical cannabis?

No. Home cultivation, often called home grow, is not allowed for medical cannabis in Mississippi. Medical cannabis must be obtained through licensed Mississippi dispensaries by qualified patients.

Can medical cannabis be grown outdoors?

No. Mississippi law and regulations do not allow medical cannabis to be grown outdoors. Cultivation must follow the requirements of the Medical Cannabis Act and applicable regulations, which generally require secure indoor or otherwise controlled environments.

How can I get a medical cannabis patient card?

Patients must complete a certification and application process. In general, this involves confirming that you have a qualifying medical condition, meeting with a participating certifying practitioner, receiving a certification if you qualify, and submitting an application through the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program.

Licensing in Mississippi is handled by multiple agencies. Dispensary licenses are handled by the Mississippi Department of Revenue (DOR).
